Using the Measurement Process

Educators tend to think of classroom assessments as a series of independent events. Teachers administer, score, and enter those scores into a gradebook. The typical way to interpret these scores as an overall view of student achievement is to compute an average. But the average is usually an inaccurate perspective because students increase their understanding and skill over time. The mathematical process of averaging does not account for student growth. Fortunately, there is another more accurate and useful perspective. Some of the foundational terms and literature for this perspective are detailed in table 4.4.
